About the Lutz Children’s Museum
The Lutz Children’s Museum was incorporated as a private non-profit organization 1958. Our mission is to provide a multi-faceted museum for children to explore culture, history, and the natural sciences through internal and external exhibits, programs, and experiences. Therefore, we offer a wide variety of classes, concerts, trips, and special events for young children and their families. We also have an extensive school outreach program which utilizes our artifact collection started by Hazel Lutz over fifty years ago.
Job Title
Part-Time Museum Instructor
Position Purpose
Under the supervision of the museum administration or designee, to support PreK–Grade 5 program instruction in the areas of culture, history, and natural sciences, as well as other general instructional support duties throughout the museum.
Essential Job Functions
- Provide Pre K–Grade 5 small group instruction under the direction of the education manager.
- Support daily functions of the museum including but not limited to visitor services, gallery supervision, and event coverage as needed.
- Collect, track and enter program data into the museum shared drive.
- Collaborate with animal curator and other museum staff on the development of new programs.
Travel Requirements
Travel between program sites, or between program sites and the museum is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
- Computer skills needed to utilize virtual programs as well as to perform data entry for program evaluation.
- Organization and time management skills.
- Flexibility and responsiveness to child participant needs.
- Ability to apply developmentally age appropriate behavior management strategies.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with child participants and their adult support staff as well as others contacted in the course of work.
- Ability to work and communicate with diverse populations.
- Ability to serve as a positive, professional role model for child participants.
- Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding child participants, employees and others.
- Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with child participants with special needs.
- Ability to report work orally or in writing to museum administration as required.
- Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Lift greater than 25 pounds.
- Get from kneeling to standing and standing to kneeling with ease and without outside support.
- Kneel on one knee, both knees.
- Get up and down from floor without assistance.
- Bend from the legs with ease.
- Shuffle quickly on your feet front to back, back to front, side to side.
- Works in museum/classroom environments, and in buses or vans.
- Ability to work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
Qualifications Profile:
Required: Bachelor degree or higher in the field of education.
Desired: Art/Theater/Music experience.
Preferred: Teacher Integrated Early Childhood/Special Ed., Birth–Kindergarten or
Integrated Early Childhood/Elementary Education N-3 and Special Education N-K teacher certification.
